Physical Description of Persona:
Leofren is a lean and wiry boy with large hazel eyes and an even bigger smile. Since childhood, he's spent most of his life doing manual work, which has made him stronger than might be expected. He is just over 5 feet tall and his bottomless appetite for food suggests that he's starting to grow fast. His face is long and narrow, with a pointed nose and chin. As a young child he had very fair hair, which has darkened to golden brown as he grew older. A light scattering of freckles across the bridge of his nose and below his eyes become more apparent in the summer months.
Emotional Description of Persona:
As one of a large family, Leofren always had to make an effort to stand out from the crowd, and he is almost never lost for words. He has an irrepressibly cheerful, enthusiastic manner and a natural talent for talking people into doing things - such as buying drinks. Working at a tavern has made him a keen judge of character and given him a better understanding of human nature than many boys his age. He can appear to be a lot more innocent than he really is.
Having grown up in a small cot with a brood of unruly siblings, he isn't used to the formalities of the classroom, nor the discipline of an apprentice's life in a Hall. A tendency to focus on whatever he finds most interesting, rather than what he's been told to, and to experiment without thinking of the consequences, sometimes gets him into trouble with his teachers. Luckily for him, he is good at talking his way out of trouble.
History of Persona:
Leofren was born and grew up in a mountain cothold in the territory of Garnet Valley Hold. His family had a variety of ways of making ends meet. His father and older brothers hunted, while his mother kept goats and gathered herbs, which she sold to traders and sometimes a travelling craftsman. She had grown up and worked at a larger lowland hold before her marriage, and passed the good education she had got there on to her children.
It was clear that the cot would not support all of Leofren's siblings, and some moved away to seek their fortune at other holds. When he was twelve, his mother found him a job with her brother, who had married the daughter of a Tavern Master at Diamond Springs Hold and settled there. Although the work in the tavern was hard and he missed his family, Leofren was happy. He enjoyed chatting to the customers and persuading them to try the new varieties of white liquor produced at the nearby distillery.
One day, not long after he had arrived, he treated a customer he was serving to an eloquent speech about the fine qualities of the drinks on offer, without realising that the visitor was the senior Master at the very distillery that had produced them. Master Stryce was amused by the boy's manner, but also impressed by his intelligence and what he'd picked up from working in the tavern. After several more visits, he offered Leofren an apprenticeship in the Vintner craft. Since the craft training would ensure a prosperous future for the boy, his uncle was delighted to accept.
After about a Turn of teaching him the basics of distilling, Stryce decided that Leofren might benefit from spending time at the Vintner Hall at Amber Hills Hold, so that he could learn other aspects of the craft alongside boys his own age. He wrote to his old friend Capwick, who was the Hallsecond, and secured a place for his apprentice. So, at the age of thirteen and a half, Leofren set out again for a new home at the Crafthall.
