Persona Profile: Tolna

Writer: Francesca

Tolna

Name: Tolna
Pronunciation: TOLL-nuh
Age: 46
Birthday: m1 d2
Rank: Master of Apprentices
Location: Dolphin Hall, Dolphin Cove Weyr
Craft: Dolphineer
Craft Rank: Master
Speciality: Meteorology

Physical Description of Persona:
Tolna’s hair is wavy, black, and kept at chin-length. It has taken Turns of experimentation for her to find products that combat friz. When in the water, she’ll either pull half of it back or, when she has the time (or a helpful daughter), puts it in braids. Her eyes are dark brown, as is her skin. She is 5’ 1” and built like most dolphineers, with strong shoulders and lean muscles.

Emotional Description of Persona:
Tolna has a generally calm, open personality. Those who don’t know her might mistakenly think she is a pushover, but they soon learn that she expects to be listened to and taken seriously. She gives honest, direct feedback to those she works with, but also a kind word and an offer of support when she sees someone is struggling or overwhelmed. Apprentices know she wants them to succeed and is committed to giving them the tools to do the best they can.

Tolna is committed to the craft, including helping young apprentices decide whether becoming a dolphineer is the right choice for them. She had a hard talk with her children before they apprenticed; even forcing them to talk to some crafter residents, to make sure they weren’t just taking the easy option. In turn, her children have sent some of her peers to her for informal counseling, which has led on more than one occasion to them leaving the Hall in pursuit of a different path. In her view, it is a benefit to the Hall to only have truly committed dolphineers.

History of Persona:
Tolna is the daughter of two dolphineers and grew up at the Northern Dolphin Hall. There was no doubt whether she would follow in their footsteps and she apprenticed as soon as she could. She walked the tables soon after turning 19, partnered with Kas, a female dolphin, and then became a Sr. Journeyman at 24.

One of her closest friends growing up was Kendir, another child of dolphineers. It surprised no one when the pair began a relationship and, when she was 21 and he 23, they married. It was a strong relationship that only became stronger after their first child was born. The couple focused more on their family than their craft for a number of Turns, eventually becoming a family of five.

As their children became a bit older, Tolna began working towards her Mastery, which involved spending a sevenday at a time at other coastal locations, gathering data about weather patterns. She became a Master at 39, but the satisfaction of achieving her lifelong dream was tempered by the death of her dolphin partner in a bad storm.

After returning from one of her research trips, her life was upended when Kendir asked for a divorce. He had been having an affair with another dolphineer and wanted to openly have a relationship with her. Tolna was devastated. Now at 45, newly divorced and wanting to be as far away as she can from her ex-husband and his girlfriend, she is glad to be the Southern Dolphin Hall’s newest Master of Apprentices.
