Persona Profile: Kelvarand (Inactive)

Writer: Estelle

Name: Kelvarand
Age: 68
Birthday: m6 d17
Rank: Holdless
Location: Elsewhere on Pern
Job: Chandler

Physical Description of Persona:
Tall and built more like a laborer than a man who spends most of his days in a workbuilding, Kelvarand's brown hair began to grey turns ago in a distinctive pattern around his temples and now is completely silver. His eyes are light grey, ringed with laugh lines, just as the rest of his face gives evidence of a generally content life. His hands and forearms bear numerous small scars from occasional tallow burns from working his trade. He enjoys wrestling and other feats of strength with the guards and laborers of the Hold.

Emotional Description of Persona:
Despite an overall content and happy manner, those who know Kelvarand best know that something didn't go quite as he wanted with his life. That tinge of lingering sorrow has little to do with the recent death of his wife of forty turns, although he does miss her companionship. It was present before he met her, a longing for someone he could never have. Living alone now for the first time in four decades, he isn't quite sure what to do with himself except to work.

History of Persona:
Born the youngest son of the former Steward of Garnet Valley Hold, Kelvarand was considered by the former Lord to be a good companion for his only son. Raised together, they were fast friends despite the three turn age. Uninterested in his father's numbers or in learning to work as a bailiff under his stewardship, he found an interest in the Hold chandler's work. His father soon had him working alongside the man, deciding the trade was as good as any for his son to earn his keep. At eighteen, he'd managed to somehow avoid the snares of all the eligible girls of the Hold, despite their mothers' encouragement that he choose one for a wife.

It wasn't until the celebration of Aswic's sixteenth birthingday that Rand let his guard slip on his most deeply guarded secret. Alone together in the young Lord-Heir's private apartments, and with too much wine shared between them, the youth kissed his friend, and that led to more. The next morning, horrified at what he'd done, he fled his friend's quarters and packed to leave. He was stopped by Aswic's arrival in his small room in the servant quarters. Knowing what had happened could cost the younger man his right to inherit after his father, Rand tried to resist. He gave in at last, too long in the habit of making Aswic happy.

He kept his distance despite his promise to stay, morose and knowing he could never have his dearest wish. If Aswic had been anything but the Lord's Heir, they could have sought a home in a Weyrhold, but that rank was one that couldn't be walked away from. So at last, Rand let his mother play matchmaker, burying the love he felt for the other man deeply to try to protect them both from the consequences of it. He married only days after his own nineteenth birthingday, two months after the night in Aswic's rooms.

His wife, though young, did sense he'd loved - and lost. Never realizing the gender of her husband's first love, she sympathized, working quietly to make Rand happy. It took turns, but he eventually realized that Lindaisa did make him content, if not completely happy. If she ever wondered at his lack of physical desire for her, she never complained that he rarely touched her in the privacy of their bedroom. They had two daughters who grew to adulthood and married happily, to their father's delight. When Lindaisa fell ill last winter he never realized he might lose her. Her death deprived him of the one companion who'd asked little of him but friendship for so long.

The quietly hidden relationship with Aswic had endured for turns even while Rand had been married. Without Lindaisa to return home to, and after a heart attack reminded him he could lose his long-time lover as well, he finds it hard to resist any time spent with Aswic.
