Crayon Awards: Favorite New Male Persona (November 2006)
Physical Description of Persona:
Virnoren is slightly short for a male, standing at just under 5'9". He has a medium complexion naturally, however in the summer tans well. His hair is cropped close, due to the fact that it is very curly, and is often uncontrollable. The hair he has remaining is a deep brown, almost appearing black. His eyes are an emerald green, and are very expressive, showing his emotions clearly. He is blessed with relatively straight and even teeth, and because of this Virnoren shows them off frequently. Virnoren has an athletic build from his turns as a wood crafter, but is not quite in the shape he would like to be. He is naturally slender, but "slender" doesn't translate to "athletic" without work. Virnoren's facial features are slender, and chiseled, which has never hurt him much when it comes to finding the ladies. In his early teenage turns, his facial features were so slender that he almost appeared feminine, which garnered a good bit of teasing the first couple of times he stood at hatchings.
Virnoren prefers wearing clothes of dark reds, browns and blacks. He has several ornate carved leather belts and jeweled daggers, as he often trades his wares with other crafters. He has a confident stride, although walks a bit fast in order to compensate for his shorter legs. His voice is an even baritone, his words calm and slowly paced so as to avoid misunderstandings. He smiles frequently, and often seems to be amused at some inner thought that he rarely conveys to others. He spends much of his free time outside of the Weyr, whittling away idly at some wood creation while he observes others as they go about their duties at the Weyr. He is frequently seen watching weyrling trainings from a distance, although he seems uncomfortable when he is near weyrlings.
Emotional Description of Persona:
If one were to attempt describing Virnoren in one word, they would probably pick "intense." Even when all outside appearances suggest that he is calm, cool, and collected, a fury of emotion exists below the surface, which he keeps carefully contained. Those about him who are particularly perceptive, or know him well, are aware of this fact, which is the primary reason why he has been so hesitant to allow any to be close to him. Virnoren is rarely seen with a group of individuals; however, he still attends every major function he can, as he makes observing people into a personal hobby of his.
Virnoren rarely opens his mouth without thinking, which can at first give one the perception that he is slow. In truth, he is very quick witted, but has had too many quick comments hurt him in the past. In his private thoughts, he often feels that he is "different" from other people in some regard, although he is at a loss to describe precisely how. Unfortunately, Virnoren has not learned how to slow his actions as much as he has learned to slow his words, and frequently acts rashly, without stopping to think through consequences. His interpersonal relationships tend towards being superficial, as it's hard to be in a true relationship when you can't be honest about your personal faults.
Virnoren has a large amount of willpower, which is perhaps one of the primary traits that he hopes will help him to Impress. He doesn't mind a little bit of hard work to get what he wants. Due to this fact, he often pushes others incredibly hard. That's not to say that Virnoren isn't a good leader, quite the opposite in fact. He just needs followers who have the same conviction, passion, drive, and will to succeed as he does. Virnoren also has a critical side, easily finding fault in plans.
One of Virnoren's strongest leadership traits is his ability to manipulate other people. With women (and some of the more homosexually inclined men) it has always been easy for him to flirt his way into getting whatever it is he desires. With other men, he uses what he knows from his observations, using little pieces of gossip and even the occasional dose of blackmail to ensure his success.
Another reason that Virnoren doesn't allow people to get close to him is because he can be very sensitive emotionally. Very little gets to him; however, if someone can dig in to just the right places, he is left very vulnerable. He is particularly vulnerable to people mentioning his previous failures, which he himself hounds himself over constantly.
In addition to woodcarving, Virnoren spends his time practicing games of skill, such as dragon poker and dragon chess. He has a keen mind for strategy, that allows him to excel at chess, but he lacks the ability to control his facial expressions well enough to effectively bluff at poker. Virnoren also likes history, and research, and can often be found spending late nights pouring over the Weyr's archives.
History of Persona:
Virnoren was born to dragonrider parents at Dolphin Cove Weyr. As is standard, he was quickly cast aside to a foster mother so his parents could perform their duties. Throughout his early childhood, he was a veritable weyrbrat, running amok around the Weyr, causing trouble, and sneaking into the hatching grounds whenever he could. As turns past, he started chasing the Weyr's women as well. He was precocious, and became quite the accomplished flirt by the age of 13.
Being a weyrbrat, it was appropriate that the boy stand at hatchings, which he started doing at the tender age of 13 turns. By 15 he had become discouraged enough to take up woodcrafting, but he honestly couldn't think of anything he'd want to do other than ride a dragon. To Virnoren there was nothing on Pern that was good enough for him, other than having work to do that was meaningful. Virnoren started working with a woodcrafter who taught him about carpentry, and wood carving. Virnoren, who had a lot of free time, gave up his more destructive pursuits in favor of creating beautiful furnishings.
Virnoren was quickly accepted as an Apprentice into the Woodcraft, and excelled in both the crafting aspects of the art, and in the growing and care for trees. He also learned a lot about survival and travel in the woods. He was asked by his teacher to transfer to the Hall, and study to get his Journeyman knots, but he still had his heart set on Impressing.
As Virnoren is so self critical, he often wonders why his dragon hasn't found him yet, and he is starting to wonder if Impresion is the best course for him. Due to his abundance of energy, he's managed to make a good amount of marks selling furniture, handles for tools and utensils, and even small toys for children.
