Persona Profile: Tiernan (Inactive)

Writer: Anaria

Name: Tiernan
Age: 40
Birthday: m3 d17
Rank: Ship Crew
Location: Elsewhere on Pern
Job: Ship Captain
Craft: Seacrafter
Craft Rank: Master
Speciality: Navigation

Physical Description of Persona:
Were you to meet Tiernan on land, you'd likely mistake him for a dragonless rider, until your gaze settled down upon his shoulder knots. When he's not at sea, he has a faraway look in his eyes, as if his thoughts are completely detached from his surroundings. At sea, on the other hand, is another story entirely. Brilliant blue eyes, which mirror the hue of the sea are filled with laughter, excitement, and keen intellect. His face is tanned from time spent outside, and is starting to become lined from a combination of both age and wear. Despite this, there's something about him that is attractive, a roguish bit of charm that cause people to want to be around him, and to want to follow his lead.

Tiernan is tall and lanky, yet well muscled from turns of climbing around the rigging of larger vessels, and other hard labor that comes from being a Seacrafter. His hair is a light golden blond color, and is normally nearly shoulder length and tousled. He often sports the scruffy startings of a beard, as he doesn't have the time to spend on shaving, yet it never seems to grow into a full beard.

Emotional Description of Persona:
Tiernan is generally a optimistic, outgoing man. He is a man who genuinely loves what he does for a living, and can smile even when things start going poorly. Unlike other Captains, who may lead by fear mongering, he demands respect by being genuinely nice to the people in his crew. The only thing his crew members fear is letting him down, or being a disappointment to him.

That said, as a Seacrafter, Tiernan does have some things that he is superstitious about. He is distrustful of women on ships, as he has seen only bad things happen when they were present. This is especially true in regards to younger women. A woman on his ship is one of the few things that will frazzle Tiernan (other than his crew talking negatively, which he believes will guarantee that negativity befalls them).

Tiernan is somewhat torn, as he does love the sea. But he knows that his father managed to handle having a family while being a sea captain, and Tiernan hopes that one day he'll be able to do the same. The problem so far is that he has yet to find a woman that can catch his eye for more than a few days at a time.

History of Persona:
Born to a Seacrafter father, and a Sea Holder mother, Tiernan's life has always revolved around the sea. From as far back as he can remember, he had his own boat, even going back to the tiny dingy he was given as a 6 turn old. His father was often away for sevendays or months at a time, and as such, he was far closer to his mother. Even despite this, he knew that he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps.

Tiernan's father was the Captain of a large trade ship, that carried cargo from the Northern Continent to the Southern Continent. As he was very well respected in the craft, Tiernan would have big shoes to fill when he started studying as a Seacrafter. Of course he had to start at the very bottom of the hierarchy, as a basic crewmember. But as he aged he quickly rose through the ranks. While he wasn't away on a vessel, he was studying ship navigation. He had a good eye for the stars which allowed him to very accurately judge where he was at any given time.

As a Journeyman he would be sent out to sea as a navigator. He started out on smaller vessels that didn't travel particularly far, but when he proved himself as capable he was assigned to ships similar to his father's. It was then that he really began enjoying his role as a Seacrafter. While he did spend most of his time at sea, he also got to travel Pern in a way that many others (short of dragonriders) ever could. During his excursions, in typical Seacrafter form, he would bed women that he met. But none of these women ever captured his affections the way the sea could. He suspects that there are likely some children of his out there, but hasn't officially been confronted by any women over them.

More recently, Tiernan has been promoted to a Master in the Seacraft and assigned the captaincy of a small trade vessel called the "Seawing". While things have gone well for him thus far, he is still relatively young and untested in these regards, and that does make him nervous.

Pets

Squirt, Blue Firelizard: aged 9, hatched m5 d16
Squirt is a rather large blue firelizard, having come from an egg that Tiernan was convinced would hatch Bronze. The firelizard was a gift from his father when he reached 30 turns, as he knew that Tiernan would soon become a Master, and hopefully be given the command of his own vessel. Squirt is on the darker end of medium blue hues, in a color reminiscent of the darkest parts of the ocean. Tiernan relies on the firelizard to convey messages, but Squirt is still quite immature, and frequently these message end up going astray.

Kiva, Feline: aged 9, born m3 d5
Kiva is a somewhat small feline, dark black in color, with medium length fur. Tiernan keeps her around for two reasons - to keep his ship free of small tunnel snakes that may damage his cargo, and because he believes that she brings him good luck. Tiernan saved her from a sinking fishing vessel when she was just a kitten, and has kept her with him ever since.
