Crayon Awards: Favorite New Female Persona (May 2011)

Physical Description of Persona:
Lyranel is the type of woman who could be extremely pretty if it weren't for the fact that she seems to be extremely malnourished. Her long, dark hair has a nice natural curl to it, but lacks the shine of health. Her skin is a bit too pale, and dark circles form under bright green eyes. Her facial features are small and angular, and her lips small but well-shaped. She is short, standing approximately 5'0" and is almost painfully thin. Her clothes are slightly ill-fitting, as they were obviously passed down from someone else.

Emotional Description of Persona:
Lyranel is naturally quite shy and reserved, although this is something that she is struggling to overcome as she learns how to handle life at the Hold. Her upbringing resulted in her not receiving much education, and as a result, she has difficulty with reading, writing and figures. She often lacks some of the more "cultured" women's skills, such as needlepoint.

Lyranel is aware of how lucky she is to have arrived at Amber Hills, and she is working as hard as she can to try and meet new friends, learn new things, and be successful. Unfortunately, she seems to have a natural ability to cause minor disasters, and she frequently has "mishaps" at the expense of others. Still, she is not deterred.

Due to her parents, and her own experiences, Lyranel is not quite certain that she believes in love, although she does hope that it is real. She also hopes that she can find someone to spend her life with.

History of Persona:
Lyranel was born at a cothold beholden to Garnet Valley. She was the youngest of 6 girls, and as such was frequently overlooked. There was not a tremendous amount of wealth at their cothold, so she rarely got anything new of her own, instead being given hand me downs from her sisters. As she grew, her sisters began to be married off one by one. However, her father's connections were few, and finding husbands for 6 girls with few skills to boast of was difficult. It was especially hard for Lyranel, who lacked the desirable "birthing figure."

When she was 16, her father announced his plan to marry her off to Gorial, a 50 turn old man who's wife had recently passed away in childbirth. He had 5 sons, but they were largely incompetent, and unfit to handle his cothold. They were quickly wed, and Lyranel found herself in an even worse cothold. She had few skills, and frequently made mistakes, which caused Gorial to grow angry with her. He also blamed her lack of figure for why he was never able to consummate their marriage, despite frequent attempts. Gorial's sons began to dislike Lyranel, because they believed that she was responsible for the poor harvests they were experiencing. In a way, this was true, as Lyranel often made mistakes that compromised their crops.

When Lyranel was 20, Gorial passed away, seemingly of a heart attack. She managed to get passage to Amber Hills from a Sweeprider, and has been trying to find her place there, although she fears the mistakes she's made since arriving there may compromise her position. More recently, Lady Holder Benani has taken her as her assistant, as she helps her handle her pregnancy and day to day needs.
