"Well, don't fuss over us, by all means." H'riv said to Enamra. The
brownrider secretly thought that his brother had done quite well in
finding a wife. It was true she was a bit on the young side, but H'riv
had found himself in bed with young women before as results of mating
flights, so it wasn't something to dwell on, he thought. Enamra was a
slip of a thing, but she was very easy on the eyes, and he imagined by
her sweet nature that she was equally sweet in the bed. Thayde should
be considering himself lucky, H'riv decided.
"I don't mind!" Enamra tossed the rider a full-fledged smile as she
set down the cheese on the table. "Please have a seat." She wanted to
make Thadye proud of her and she wanted to make a good impression on
his family. She pulled the kettle off of the fire and with a padded
glove, poured a cup of tea for each of them. She paused before pouring
her own, glancing at Thayde. "Do you want me to go so you can visit
with them by yourself?"
"Of course not," he said, feeling heat emanating from Aydramine. "They
came to see you, after all."
"That's right. We grew up with him, you're far more interesting,"
H'riv grinned, causing a dimple to show.
"Easy," Thayde warned his brother, earning a chuckle from the brownrider.
"Enamra, would you care to meet my Uuketh?" H'riv asked, knowing with
certainty that Aydramine wanted a chance to talk with Thayde.
Enamra's blush colored her cheeks, but she put the kettle down at the
offer, her eyes wide. She'd seen dragons of course, they came to the
hall often, but never up close. Excitement glowed in her eyes. "Oh,
can I? You wouldn't mind?" She looked at Thayde. "Can I?"
Aydramine's head snapped around and she speared Thayde with her eyes.
"Yeah, Thayde, can she?"
"We'll catch up with the two of you," Thayde said with a nod.
H'riv stood, waggling his eyebrows at Thayde over top of Enamra's
head, his eyes dancing with laughter since he knew that Thayde was in
for a reaming.
Enamra followed H'riv out, a wide, excited smile on her face. The
thought of meeting a dragon up close was a thrilling one.
The moment the door closed Aydramine rounded on Thayde. "Are you
serious, Thayde? How old is she? Fourteen?"
"Ah, fifteen," he corrected, which only served to further agitate his sister.
"Fifteen?!"
"Aydra -" he held up his hands placatingly.
"No, don't 'Aydra' me! She's barely more than a child and she acts
like she's your pet! 'Can I, Thayde? Only if Thayde says so'," she
mimicked.
Thayde's smiled dropped, and his eyes flashed. Aydramine quieted,
knowing what the look on his face meant. "Are you finished? If so,
I'll tell you about Enamra."
Aydramine licked her lips and inclined her head. "I'm listening."
--
"This is Uuketh," H'riv told Enamra as the brown lowered his head to
inspect her.
At first, she was terrified of the brown's size, but after being
reassured, approaching him was easier. "He's beautiful," she breathed.
"Hello, Uuketh." She looked at H'riv. "Can I touch him? Would he
mind?"
"Of course not. I'll show you the best places to scratch." H'riv said
as he rubbed his fingers along Uuketh's eyeridge.
She reached out, hesitated, then slowly stroked her fingers along his
eyeridge where he'd shown her. The expression of awe lingered as she
touched the brown. "He's feels so soft." She scratched gently and
looked over at H'riv, her eyes showing her delight. "Like this?"
"That's right," H'riv said, leaning against his dragon to watch her.
"Do you like it here?" he asked.
So involved was she with scratching the dragon, that she barely paid
attention to the question. "Oh yes." She smiled at Uuketh, soaking in
the attention that she was being given by the dragon. "I love it here,
especially getting to swim with the dolphins." Nimble fingers found
areas that she thought might be especially itchy. "Thayde and Jylanya
have been really good to me."
"I am glad, then, for you. Thayde needs someone like you in his life."
H'riv watched as Uuketh closed his many eyelids in appreciation of the
scritches.
That caught her attention and she looked at H'riv, brow creasing just
a little. "No, not really. But I'm lucky he was willing to marry me."
She turned back to the dragon. "He's a good man."
**Uh oh, he'd better be careful. One wrong move and he'll fall from
the pedestal she has him on.** H'riv thought to himself.
"How's it going out here?" Thayde asked as he and Aydramine arrived.
Enamra turned, sending Thayde a bright smile. "It's wonderful. Isn't
Uuketh beautiful?" She turned back to the dragon, speaking softly.
"And you are very beautiful. Or maybe I should say handsome since
you're a male. But I like you."
"Everything settled?" H'riv asked quietly while Enamra was speaking with Uuketh.
"Yes, I'll fill you in on the ride." Aydramine said. "Mother will want
to meet her, you know," she said, turning to Thayde.
"I know, I just didn't want to overwhelm her with the entire family so soon."
H'riv just shook his head. "You know Ma, if you don't, she'll bring
the whole family down here. You'd better get a date scheduled. I'll
come down and pick you two up, since my lot in life, apparently, is to
ferry my siblings around."
Aydramine reached up and pinched his cheek, "Don't act as if you don't
like it, big brother." H'riv batted her hand away.
Enamra looked at all three of them. "Me? Ride Uuketh?" Her eyes flew
to each person in turn, then slowly patted the dragon, regretfully
pulling away to return to Thayde's side. "I'd like to meet your
mother."
"You will," Thayde promised. "I'll get in touch with mother and plan a
date. Now you two can go back and report to the rest of the family."
H'riv laughed and pulled his younger brother in for a hug before
turning and doing the same with Enamra. "It was nice to meet you,
sis."
She gave a little 'oof' at the hug, but returned it warmly. "Thank you
for letting me touch Uuketh. It was nice to meet you too." She
released him and turned to Aydramine. "I hope we can get to know each
better."
Aydramine smiled, seeming less tense than before. "We will," she
hugged Enamra. "If you need anything, you're family now, you can write
to any of us."
Enamra returned the hug and nodded. "Thank you. I will."
