Enamra

Enamra

H'riv found her down on the beach, her long, dark hair blowing in the
breeze from the waves. "Enamra," he called to her as he walked her way
his riding boots abandoned further up on the shoreline so he could
walk barefoot in the sand.

"I was visiting Thayde and wanted to stop by, the last time I was here
I didn't get a chance to drop in and tell you hello." The brownrider
was wearing his signature good-natured smile.

Enamra turned, but there wasn't an answering smile for him. "Hello,
H'riv." She turned back to watch the waves. "I know you didn't. You
were too busy telling Thayde about Jalodwyn and her baby."

H'riv's look sobered some as he came to stand beside his
sister-in-law, his hands shoved into his pockets as he looked out over
the waves. "Yes, I did talk to Thayde about Jalodwyn. I hear she's
transferring back to Dolphin Cove now."

Enamra's face was somber. "She arrived this morning." She took a deep
breath. "Why did you do that, H'riv? Why did you tell him anything? We
were doing so good."

"Life is complicated, little sister," he said around a bit of a sigh.
"I have known Jalodwyn for Turns, maybe half my life or so, and the
way she was being treated at Jade Harbor...." H'riv trailed off and
then turned his head to look at Enamra. "I don't want anyone treated
that way. I would have done the same thing for you."

"Maybe she deserves it." Enamra spoke softly. "She has his baby,
H'riv. I lost mine and now..." She bowed her head. "I wish you hadn't
said anything. You how he's like. You knew what he'd do, H'riv. It was
hard enough forgiving him, but now I'm going to be reminded of it
every day."

The tone of her voice and the look in her eyes wrung the brownrider's
heart. "Enamra, I don't pretend to know what it's like to have
experienced the things that you have, but I know that Thayde loves
you. He loves you so much that I think he would do really wreckless
things to keep you. I know it will be hard for you to see her, but he
doesn't love her. He has a responsibility to her and that's all."

She'd already thought about the responsibility and honestly, she could
accept that. It was simply that she wished his responsibility was
elsewhere so she didn't have to be reminded of it. "I was Searched,
H'riv. Maybe I should have gone."

"One of the first times Uuketh met you he told me you would be a good
Candidate." H'riv revealed. "I didn't say anything about it for
obvious reasons. What did Thayde say, about you being Searched?" He
imagined his younger brother had panicked at the thought of Enamra
leaving.

Enamra's eyes widened at H'riv's admitted secret, then looked back
down and away. "He thought I should go to the Weyr. Now this. It makes
me wonder."

"He thought you should go?" H'riv couldn't hide the little bit of
surprise in his voice. Thayde was so possessive that he had been sure
the Hallmaster wouldn't dream of letting Enamra out of his sight.
Especially not to the Weyr of all places.

She nodded. "Yeah. But I didn't want to go." Enamra sighed softly. "If
I wasn't here, then..." Her voice trailed off as she looked back over
the waves. "Like I said, it makes me wonder."

"If you weren't here, then... what?" H'riv said, catching on that part.

"Nothing." Enamra shook her head. "I'm not going to the Weyr. I'm
going to apprentice here. That's what I want."

"Apprentice, huh?" He smiled at her. "That sounds fun. You are such a
natural swimmer that you'll be great at it."

Finally bringing up a smile, Enamra turned to him. "I hope so. I'll be
busier and won't really do the duties of a regular Hallmaster's wife,
but I think that's okay too. I didn't like trying to arrange all the
balls and social things. I'd rather be in the water."

"I don't blame you, I hate big social events." H'riv looked at Enamra.
"No, really, I bloom in small social circles. It's one of the reasons
I became a technician, it's just you and some wires and machines. I
love it."

Her brows arch. "I would think you'd like big parties. That's kind of
surprising." She grinned. "You're definitely something different."

H'riv was glad to see Enamra smiling a bit. He felt a little guilty
over her unhappiness, since he had played a vital role in Thayde's
involvement in Jalodwyn's situation. "I like to keep people guessing."
