"Snacks have arrived!" H'riv announced proudly, holding up a large basket in each hand.
Jeyme's eyes lit as she swooped over and took the baskets. "How do you always manage to get the best snacks from the Dining Cavern?" she asked as she began pulling out different savory and sweet items.
"Simple." The brownrider leaned his hip against the table, crossed his arms over his chest, and then gave Jeyme his best sultry look.
"That?" She cocked an eyebrow. "_That_ look gets you better food?"
"Hey," H'riv's look turned into a pout. "It works."
"It doesn't work. He bribes them with money," T'kala piped in, having walked in on the tail end of the conversation.
The blush on the brownrider's cheekbones was a dead giveaway.
"Ouch. Busted," Jeyme laughed.
"That's okay, you'll both be sorry when I've taken all of your marks tonight." H'riv picked up the deck of dragonpoker cards from the table and began shuffling them skillfully.
"You'll have to beat me first."
H'riv's jaw dropped as he looked over his shoulder at the voice behind him and then pinioned Jeyme with his dusky green eyes. "You invited _her_?"
Jeyme flashed an unrepentant smile. "You nervous, H'riv?" She looped an arm around Zehva's shoulders, pulling the healer further into her weyr.
"She took all my money last time!"
Zehva smirked. "Then I hope you've developed a better poker face."
It was immediately obvious that H'riv had _not_ in fact developed a better poker face since their last game.
T'kala shook his head. "When will you learn, H'riv?" The bluerider took a seat at the card table, having acquired a mound of snacks to put beside his poker chips.
"Allright, ladies and the-best-looking-bluerider-at-Barrier-Lake, time to put your money where your mouth is," H'riv said, taking his chair and beginning to deal.
Jeyme and Zehva shared a quick grin as they took their seats opposite one another at the table.
"How are your kids?" T'kala asked Jeyme as the group viewed their cards and arranged them in their hands.
"Well, Dheymin, seven, has begun saying some choice words that has his fostermother fit to be tied. I keep saying he's heard the words from his father but...." Jeyme grinned a little and shrugged guiltily. "And then Ayeme, five, has recently found her emotions. Anything can send her into a meltdown of tears." She waved her hand. "Faranth help me."
"What? Ayeme? Emotional? Where does she get that?" Zehva teased, peeking at Jeyme over her cards.
"Ha. Ha."
H'riv shook his head. "This woman?" He jerked a finger at Jeyme. "Emotional? You ought to hear her barking orders in her Wingthird voice."
"I don't bark," Jeyme insisted.
"That's right," T'kala said, laying down a card on the table. "She bellows. Firmly."
This earned the bluerider a slap on the arm.
"You see the abuse we deal with?" T'kala said to Zehva.
Zehva did not seem impressed. "Until you have the Weyrhealer breathing down your neck while you remove a sliver of glass from a man's eye, you have no idea what abuse is."
"What about you T'kala? I've seen you walking around with that greenrider from Ash Wing... What's his name?" Jeyme asked.
"His name is E'yen," T'kala replied, not looking up from his cards.
The other three at the table all exchanged glances.
"And?"
"And what?" T'kala asked, feigning confusion.
"Is there something going on there?" Zehva asked, motioning for him to share.
T'kala's lips pursed. "I don't kiss and tell."
H'riv barked out a laugh. "Since when?"
The bluerider's face melted into a grin. "Yeah, I know, but I'm not telling this time. For real, you guys, I told him I wouldn't. It's still early, you know?"
"Fine," Jeyme sighed, winking at T'kala, "keep the juicy details of your sex life to yourself, then."
"More wine?" H'riv held the bottle up. Three empty glasses were eagerly pushed toward him.
"How did you score this vintage?" Zehva asked, recognizing it as one of the fancier bottles from Amber Hills.
"I have my ways," the brownrider said mysteriously.
Jeyme held a hand up to her mouth and whispered loudly. "His brother is the Dolphin Hallmaster. Rank has its perks."
H'riv rolled his eyes but didn't refute the claim. "'Thank you, H'riv,' is what I think you mean."
T'kala, Zehva, and Jeyme all chimed in unison, "Thank you, H'riv."
"Now, shall we wager?"
All eyes turned to Zehva, who pushed half of her marks into the pile with a sinister grin.
H'riv exhaled and took a big gulp of his fancy wine. "Well, here we go..."
