Virnoren nodded, pouring the wine as he recited:
"Rise in glory, Bronze and gold.
Dive entwined, Enhance the Hold.
Count three months and more And five heated weeks, A day of glory and In a month who seeks?"
He clinked glasses with Daiirue and took a large swig from his wine glass, savoring the flavor. It was a good vintage from the local Vintner's, quite potent for a wine, he thought to himself. Maybe an entire skin wasn't a good idea? Bah, what could a little headache in the morning really hurt? "So, what do you think Daiirue? Good stuff?"
"Nice." Daiirue said tersely. He took another, longer sip, relaxing a bit as the alcohol started to soak though his system. He could feel the warm, tingly feeling starting already. "Strong." He commented a while later. "I don't think I've had this one before. I like it. That poem... it's one of the old teaching ballads isn't it?" He frowned, trying to remember. It had been a long time since his harper classes.
Virnoren nodded. "Generally one they teach in candidate classes as well, but I don't think they've mentioned it this go around. I want to say it's the Gold Flight song?" He took a few more swigs of his wine, considering it more, but the more he thought about it, the more his thoughts slipped through his mental fingers like water through a sieve. "Mmmm.... this is some good wine," he stated. "Hehe... did I just giggle?"
Daiirue grinned. "Yes, you did." He finished off his glass. He could feel his body relaxing under the influence of the wine. He had needed this.
"Faranth! This stuff is good!" He paused, realizing he had spoken aloud, then shrugged. "Got any more? I think it's going to rain soon." He added watching more clouds move in. "I wish it wouldn't. It stormed all day."
Virnoren nodded. "Yeah. I'm not too keen on the rain." He pulled out his second wineskin, wondering idly where the first had disappeared to so fast. As he poured for himself and Daiirue, a few droplets of rain began falling down. He glared up at the sky. "I don't want to get my tunic all wet!" He complained loudly. In his semi-drunken state, it seemed a better idea to remove his tunic than to go back to his bunk, so he did so. He tossed his tunic off under the overhang haphazardly, and leaned back against the cool rock. He was beginning to enjoy the feeling of rain against his skin.
Daiirue laughed. "You're worried about your tunic, and not your pants? Why not take them both off -or have you got something to hide?" He grinned at Virnoren, the day slipping away behind the alchoholic fuzz in his brain.
Something niggled at him for a moment, a half forgotten memory involving how much was too much wine, but he took another sip from his glass and the feeling vanished. "Shards, the rain is cold!" He exclaimed stepping out from under the overhang. "Feels almost as good as the wine." He laughed.
"Hold this. I'll show you." He thrust his glass at the other candidate and began peeling off his shirt and tunic.
