"Barthella," one of the serving girls said as she poked her head in through the swinging door to the kitchen where the cook was working on some setups for breakfast before she headed in for the night. "There's a fella here askin for ya, he's a bit a cute too." she added with a wink before popping back out to check on the last of the customers.
The head cook was unimpressed, probably one of the regulars that were too drunk to get home and were wanting to beg for a free nights board. Still, if she didn't deal with it, someone would have to wake Zandreau, and she didn't want him bothered.
Kalan was sitting at a table nursing a large mug of beer when Barthella finally showed herself. He lifted his head and greeted her with a smile, straightening up as she approached. "Hail and well met, Ella."
Barthella's eyes rounded in surprise as she saw her friend in front of her. It'd been what... a turn since she'd seen him? "Kalan! What are you doing here?"
"Just passing through. Thought I would stop by and see one of my favorite people." Kalan lifted the mug to his lips and took a long draw before speaking again. "How are you?"
She sat down next to him a broad grin on her face, "I'm doing great. As you can see I've moved. What about you? What brings you around here?"
"Oh, just traveling, seeing some friends." Kalan lifted his eyebrows. "Including you. What brought you here?"
"I followed Bheverhan when he opened this tavern." she replied, as if there would be any other reason. "And friends? All by yourself, or did you finally settle down with a wife?" Best to get it out now before they got too far into old times, she wasn't a thief.
"Me? Settle down?" Kalan burst out laughing. "Barthella, you should know me better than that. Besides, with the way I travel, having a wife isn't really in the picture right now."
Barthella grinned as she slid her foot out to brush up the side of his calf, "Just checking. A lot can happen in a turn."
"Ah, but that's one thing that hasn't happened." Kalan set down his now almost empty mug and leaned forward. "When are you free?"
"Kitchen closes up in about an hour. Maybe we could catch up afterwards in my quarters?" she added, her voice casual but laced with promise.
"That sounds like a fine idea. Where are your quarters?" Kalan finished off his beer, eyes twinkling.
She made motion to the remaining serving girl to refill Kalan's mug and noticed she had a group waiting for their food. "I'll show you the way when I get off, you just enjoy your beverages and I'll send out a little snack to keep you occupied while you wait."
"Yes ma'am!" Kalan saluted her then took another swig from his refilled mug. He watched Barthella saunter off with an appreciative eye. Oh yes, stopping there was going to be well worth his time.
