"Knock Knock." Barthella said as she gave the Hallmaster's door a small
shove and opened it a crack. She'd been assured the man was inside, but
she'd knocked twice without an answer.
Causton hurriedly gathered up the paperwork he had insisted on Daigoro
bringing up to him. He was grateful to have some _real_ work to do, he just
didn't want Geni to know he had it up here. His wife didn't normally knock
on the door, unless he had a visitor. The papers he gathered were quickly
shoved under the pile of updates Daigoro had brought them mixed in with,
legitimate updates that Geni hadn't minded letting him read.
"Er, come in, come in." He called, turning to face the door, which he saw
was already opening, he'd managed to hide his secret just in time, he smiled
smugly.
"Good morning." Barthella greeted the Hallmaster as she stepped inside. It
was still _technically_ morning anyways, but about time for lunch, hence her
visit.
"Ah... Barthella!" Causton smiled widely in welcome, "Come in, come in. I
was expecting..." he shook his head, "Never mind, come in." He waved her
forward.
She carried a tray over to Causton and set it down on the table. "I've
brought you some soup. My own special recipe filled with all the
restoratives you'll need to get you over this cold of yours."
"You too, huh?" he asked, taking a whiff of the steam coming out of the
bowl. "Geni's been stuffing me with all sorts of concoctions in the hope
that something will finish it, or me, off."
"Well, when mine works, you won't hurt my feelings if you credit Geni's."
Barthella teased with a wink.
"Oh shards, no." He shook his head, "if yours works, _you'll_ get all the
credit. It'll mean if I get sick again, she won't stuff me full of anything
she can." He laughed deeply.
Barthella chuckled, "Well, you _are_ a brave man aren't you?"
"I have to be with what she has been feeding me..." he grinned, before
taking a sip of the broth she had brought him. "Ahhh..." he smiled widely
in her direction, "Do I detect...wine in here?" he asked, his eyebrows
lifting.
Leave it to a vintner, she'd put very little in, just enough to cover up the
bitterness of some of the herbs. "Among other things. As I said, full of
restoratives for the body and the mind."
"I'll believe you, thousands wouldn't." He nodded, taking another sip.
"Much better than some of the concoctions Geni has brought up to me."
"Well, it wouldn't serve my reputation very well if it tasted poorly."
Barthella gave a little laugh. "I would stay and visit, but I've the noon
rush to attend to. I'll bring you up something for dinner if you like."
"Yes please...erm...can I ask a favour of you, though Barthella?" he asked,
a small smile crossing his face.
She eyed him curiously, "Of course, what is it?"
"Would you be able to make it a meal for two?"
Barthella smiled, that wasn't any sort of favor at all, "Sure. My soup for
you, but I'll add some nice wherry chunks to fill you up, and what would you
like for your guest?"
"The _guest_ will be Geni, so whatever you deem suitable. And a nice bottle
of red would go down well if you could hunt one up for me. I trust you and
Bhervehan to make the choice for me."
The Head Cook gave her head a nod as she opened the door to leave. "I'll
have it served by seven."
"Thanks, Barthella." Causton waved her a brief farewell.
