Feminine skills

Writers: Eimi, Paula

Characters: Uetia, Sabonus
Description: Uetia is going to take Sabonus to play in the snow
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 8, day 7 of Turn 5

"There's only one problem with this plan," Sabonus said as he rounded
the corner with the greenrider. "We live in a tropical Weyr. Won't I
need warm clothes? Where am I going to get that?"

"Don't you have anything suitable for flight /between/? If they keep you
warm there, they keep you warm in snow. Or you can always ask the
Headwoman," Uetia replied.

"I could borrow some, I guess. It's not as cold as /between/, is it?"
If it was, he might have to reconsider this plan. For all his natural
curiosity, he did not like the chill of /between/ at all.

"No, not that cold at all. Nothing is as cold as /between/, " Uetia
said.

"Well, then, a wheryhide jacket should be enough, right? What about a
picnic?" The could ask the kitchens to make a basket for them with
sandwiches and fruit and whatnot.

"I already asked them to make us something. We should pick it up before
we leave," Uetia grinned.

"Well, you are a step ahead of me, it seems," he grinned, glad that she
was thinking along the same vein. Sabonus couldn't help teasing her a
little. "But you couldn't think far enough ahead to get me a wheyrhide
jacket?"

"I presumed you have one," Uetia shrugged.

"I lived on a ship and live in a tropical Weyr!" he protested with mock
indignation. "Why should _I_ have a jacket? I always borrowed one!
Did you run out and buy a Wheyrhide jacket as soon as you got to the
Weyr?"

"No, I already had one. I think one of my brother's brought it to me,"
Uetia said and scowled a bit.

He noticed her smile was suddenly gone. "What's that face for? Did he
pick the ugliest color and you feel you have to wear it out of loyalty
to him?"

"Ah, it's nothing," Uetia shook her head.

"Now, that is the answer a woman should never give a man," Sabonus said
gently, though still trying to sound light and unconcerned. "See, no
matter how I respond to that, I lose. If I press you to tell me what's
wrong, I come off looking like a pushy old auntie. If I _say_ I accept
that it's nothing, deep down I'll spend the rest of the afternoon
wondering if I was supposed to be figuring out what it is through the
subtle hints you've been feeding me that, being a man, I just didn't
get."

Uetia laughed. "Let's just get going, okay?" she asked.

"Ugh, you're so mean to me!" he sighed dramatically. "All right, fine,
let's go then."

Uetia couldn't help but laugh again. "First stop is the kitchen."

"I don't suppose you asked for a bottle of rum to be tucked into the
basket, did you?" He had heard that could stave off the cold.

"You're talking to a seacrafter's daughter. Would I go anywhere without
it?" the question was rhetoric.

"No," he grinned, pulling a metal flask out of his pocket. "I can see
you've been well trained."

"Depends on matter. Don't ask me to cook," Uetia said. "Unless it's
fish," she added.

Fresh cooked fish was always nice, but he wouldn't starve in the Weyr!
"That's all right. We can eat in the dinning hall well enough."

"My education is bit lacking when it comes to feminine skills," Uetia
said. They came to the kitchen and she talked with one the cooks,
receiving a cloth covered basket. "Right, here's lunch," she patted the
basket.
"Sirjath's waiting outside."

"Sounds good, we just need to get me a jacket! Oh and Uetia," Sabonus
stepped up close to her, his fingers purposefully brushing hers as he
leaned a little closer to softly say, "I quite like all your feminine
skills."

"Uh, thank's" Uetia managed to say through her blushing.

And that blush, he thought as he took the basket from her, was her most
appealing feminine skill.
