succeed.
Location: Vintner Hall

"Red wine. Something local, if you please, Puwul," the new Hallsecond
said as he pulled his stool up to the bar.
"Coming right up, master Fayazel," Puwul replied.
Fayazel rolled his eyes wearily. "Oh please, drop the master while I'm
drinking."
"If you say so," the tavern master smiled and brought him a glass. "This
is called Amber Ruby. Made from local vines by local holders."
"Ah yes, from before the Hall came," Fayazel said, eyebrows raised. He
was rather impressed. "It seems they have left you quite a stock,
Puwul!"
"Yes, all I had to do was to pick up from where the previous Tavern
Master left things," Puwul replied.
"Yes, isn't it grand to just slip into another man's seat?" the
Hallsecond smiled, lifting the glass up to the light and inspecting the
color before swirling it around and bringing it to his nose for a nice
whiff. "Hmmmmm... It smells dark. Earthy. Almost like fresh fallen
leaves..." He raised the glass once more. "To Zandreu and Daigoro and
the cushy chairs they've left us, eh?"
"Aye," Puwul agreed and poured himself a beer. He preferred it over
wine.
Fayazel didn't much care for beer. It was a rather common drink, in his
opinion, though he understood that many people enjoyed it. But no beer,
as far as he was concerned, had the depth, the character, or the dignity
of a good glass of finely aged wine. Of course, he would never tell a
beer drinker that! "They do grow good grapes in this soil, don't they."
"So have I heard," Puwul replied. When it came to the actual process of
making wine, his conversational skills were rather limited. His
knowledge was limited to the end products. He knew good from bad and
could name the exact market-value for any wine-label, beer brand or
liquor. He could generally see what different people prefered. In his
previous tavern, he had had special taps for good clients and lousy
clients. You could get served "dragon pee" or the Vintner's halls best,
depending how you got along with the staff. Puwul knew he couldn't do it
here, it would ruin the place's reputation. A shame really, it was quite
fun to serve bad stuff to a difficult customer.
The Hallsecond looked around the room over his shoulder. There were a
couple tables occupied by one or two souls, but otherwise it was empty.
"It's a quiet night, is it not? Or does it pick up later?"
"It's work day. Come here the night before the Restday. And there's no
harper here to attract people," he gazed the empty performance stand.
"Is there Thread falling today too? I had heard that dragonriders often
frequent our tavern." Of course, they had plenty of drink of their own.
Fayazel had seen their own tithe Records to the Hold and some, if not
most, of that would be going to the Weyr he was sure.
"I think there is. Not around here though, but in other part of the
Weyr's protectorate," Puwul replied thoughtfully. "Which means that
after it's over, some riders may come to celebrate the fact they're
still alive."
"Perhaps I'll wait around, then," the Hallsecond said with a delighted
smile. The thought of a rider fresh from battle with their ancient
enemy and in a celebratory mood sounded appealing to him! But of
course, that was not the official reason. "I would like to see this
place with a bit more life in it."
Puwul nodded. "There's one thing I've been wanting to ask since I got
here. The previous masters did some brewing on their own here, but I'm
not to it. So, could I get someone to check out the brewing vats? I have no
idea what's cooking in there."
"Oh my, that does sound rather disgusting if they just left something in
there and it's gone bad." He wondered as well if they had bothered to
leave a recipe for the taverns own special brew. "I will get a brewer
in to check on it straight away. And perhaps we can find brewers to
take over production if you're not keen. Or make it some sort of
journeyman or apprentice project or something."
"That sounds better than let me start to mess around with it," Puwul
snorted.
"Perhaps we should think about making a tavern wine was well," Fayazel
said thoughtfully, swirling the wine in his own glass and watching it
coat the glass.
"That could interest customers," Puwul said thoughtfully. He liked the
way Fayazel thought. Together they could do this tavern even more
profitable.
"I should think so. And perhaps offer a discount to dragonmen on
Threadfall days. To show our appreciation, of course." And to get more
riders to frequent their tavern. That would certainly make Fayazel
happy!
Puwul nodded and smiled. "I think we can make this place even more
successful."
"And that would look good for _both_ of us," Fayazel agreed.
"Aye indeed," Puwul nodded.
