Sabonus flopped back on the bed, kicking off his boots. "Shards, what a
night," he sighed, rather proud of the way he had managed to make
conversation, and even perhaps made friends, with so many members of
Uetia's family. It had been an intimidating, but important step in
their relationship. Still, he was glad that first meeting was over!
"Yes, it was. Do I have baby drool on my shoulder?" Uetia replied with a
tired chuckle.
He managed the energy to lift his head to look at her with a wicked
grin. "Take your clothes off and I won't notice."
"Oh, you naughty boy!" Uetia kicked her shoes off and flopped down next
to him, leaning against his shoulder. "How on Pern G'el managed to drag
you into dancing with him? You created a scandal. The old aunties were all
choking on their sherry!"
"I blame it on the rum," Sabonus sighed. That and his deep desire to
impress her family. He reached an arm under her head and wiggled into a
more comfortable position. "You better be careful. You have
competition now."
"Hmph, somehow I just can't see you running off with G'el," she snorted.
"Yeah, you're probably right." Sabonus brushed at one of her hairs that
was tickling his neck rather annoyingly. "At least I know that if
things don't work out between us, I have options."
"Ah-hah," she was too tired to laugh properly. "I really felt sorry for
Dell's wife. Very pregnant, alone and know knowledge when her husband
gets back home," she sighed.
"Such is a sailor's life." How many children were born in seaholds with
their father's out to see. "It isn't any easier on the men either, you
know." Most he knew would much rather be by their woman's side when
their time came.
"I know. It's the life I tried to avoid by going to a craft," Uetia
said. "That and just wanting very much to have a craft."
"And here you are, stuck with a seacrafter again. How did that happen?"
he asked, lifting his head just enough to grin at her.
"I don't know. Maybe life is trying to tell me something," Uetia said.
"Just what do you think it's telling you, eh? Give up?"
"Something like that or You can't get away," Uetia chuckled was tired.
"Good. Cause I don't ever intend to get away." This time Sabonus' tone
was serious.
"Ever?" her tone was mixture of curious and satisfied.
He pulled his arm out from under her head so he could use it to prop
himself up. Laying a hand on her stomach and looking straight down into
her face, he said, "You know this isn't just a casual thing between us,
right? This isn't just for fun."
"Yes, I know. I wouldn't take a casual thing to see my family," Uetia
replied seriously and her heart was pounding pleasantly.
"I know," he quickly assured her, making sure she understood how much he
appreciated the gesture. "But we've never actually said it out loud,
have we. 'Let's meet my family for Turns End' and 'I think this is
something really special' aren't quite the same, are they. So I'll say
it. Uetia, I think what we have is something very special, and I don't
ever see it ending between us."
"Oh, Sabonus," she was touched. "I believe I am seriously and
irrevocably in love with you."
He chuckled slightly, blushing a bit. "Well, that certainly held
nothing back." But the glow in his eyes told her he was very pleased
with her words. Leaning down he kissed her softly. When their lips
parted, he whispered against them, "I love you, too."
She wrapped her arms around his neck. She wanted to ask him to be her
weyrmate, but something was still holding her back. Fear perhaps, that
it didn't work out or the fear of what would happen if he did Impress.
The word 'weyrmate' also floated through his mind, but he felt the same
trepidation. It was one thing to tell a woman that he loved her. Quite
another to say he was ready to spend the rest of his life thinking of
her needs as equal or superior to his own. It would come, he was sure,
but he certainly didn't want to rush it. Instead murmured the words
once more as he leaned in for a much more thorough kiss.
She was quite eager for more kisses.
