S'yei glanced around the Dining Cavern. He was rather tired of taking
meals by himself in his weyr and figured it was about time to start
making some friends. Glancing about with a tray of food in hand, S'yei
began to survey his options for a dinner partner. To his left some
women sat- that was definitely a 'no'- and then to his right he
spotted one of his wingmates- E'rae. S'yei wasn't sure what to make of
his fellow bluerider. The man could definitely be described as quiet
and S'yei wasn't sure if he'd have much conversation if he sat with
the man. Still, he supposed he could just give it a try.
}:If you run out of things to talk about you can always tell him about
your wonderful, smart, strong dragon.:{ Yalith piped in with a
dragonic snicker.
**Yeah, I'll do that.** S'yei replied, his response dripping with
sarcasm as he made his way over to where E'rae sat.
The bluerider looked up at the other's approach and noted him. He
didn't know much about the newcomer yet, but he had seen him join the
wing and had been told he was a transfer. "Well met," he offered
before going back to his meal.
It was more than what S'yei had been expecting, "And you as well," he
offered as he took one of the seats, "I hope you don't mind if I join
you. I'm still acquainting myself with everyone."
"That's fine." E'rae had been a holder before impression, but he had
impressed at River Bluff, never leaving.
S'yei dug into his food, his eyes surveying the cavern and the other
people that milled about. It would take a while for S'yei to get to
know everyone, he surmised. Unlike his dragon, he wasn't gifted at
instantly knowing his peers' names.
"So, E'rae, what can you tell me about the Wing? I just met our
Wingthird yesterday."
"She's rather new still. Weyrbred though, so she's been around it for a while.
The Wingsecond used to be Weyrleader, his father is the Weyrleader, which
is our Wingleader of course. So we've got a lot of experience going. We just
had a new group of weyrlings come up some months back though." He thought
about Im're for a minute then drank his soup.
S'yei considered all of that with a tilt of his eyebrows as he chewed
thoughtfully, "That does speak of experience," he agreed, thinking
that Yalith was probably sitting around with his chest puffed out over
being in the Weyrleader's Wing. The blue dragon, was of course, all
jest in the end, much like his rider, "Have you always flown in this
Wing?"
"Since graduating weyrlinghood aye." He'd seen a lot come and go over
the turns, but that was the life of a rider.
That was quite a testimony to E'rae and his dragon, S'yei thought as
he mulled over the information. He'd never met a rider younger than
him that was as quiet as E'rae. S'yei supposed there was nothing wrong
with being on the silent side. In fact, S'yei had often been told that
he was "brooding". The bluerider didn't really agree with that
assessment, but he was usually too busy with a glass of wine to argue
the point, "Well, here's to many more Turns in the Wing then." He said
giving E'rae a little salute with his cup of klah.
Nodding the toast, he finished his bread and sat back. "So where did you come
from?"
"Dragonsfall." Even though leaving the Weyr had been S'yei's decision,
he still got a bit nostalgic sometimes when he thought about his
"home". Hopefully, with time, River Bluff would become his home and
the yearning for Dragonsfall would decrease.
"Hmm I've been there a time or two, but not very often." He shrugged,
not knowing much about the cold Weyr, though he had heard plenty. "Our
Weyrwoman here seems to like the new one over there though."
"Yeah, I don't have any complaints about her." S'yei said truthfully,
sparing a thought for his former Weyrwoman. Finishing off his plate,
the bluerider pushed it aside, "I don't really know much about the
Weyrleaders here though. Anything you can tell me about them?"
"Old K'sedel has been around for turns. He knows his stuff. The Weyrwoman
came here around the same time you got yours. She's from Vista Point and..
well you'd have to meet her." He almost choked on a laugh where Rhosyn was
concerned.
S'yei raised an eyebrow at that, "Is there something... wrong with
her?" He questioned, now curious about the River Bluff Weyrwoman. He
hadn't really had a chance to meet her, or talk to anyone concerning
her.
"Not wrong...just..well she's in a class of her own." He was glad they finally
had a Weyrwoman who was producing good clutches and fulfilling her duties
without being as forceful as Zharesti had been. Still, she was amusing too. "I
take it you didn't hear about the hatching at Dolphin Cove?"
"I'm not sure how I missed it, apparently I'm out of the gossip loop.
What happened at Dolphin Cove?" S'yei asked curiously, thinking he
needed to listen more when Yalith was yammering on about the latest
gossip from this dragon or that.
"So..she went down there wearing a dress that wasn't really a dress. It
was a towel. And then a holder called her a whore. She laughed. The Dolphin Cove
Weyrleader punched him out for it." E'rae would have wanted to see it,
but so it was.
S'yei chuckled at the story, wishing he'd been there to witness such
an event, "I imagine that everyone was in an uproar after that."
"Aye. Course the even more interesting part..after Lord Corowal had the man
hauled off, the Weyrwoman and the other Weyrleader were dancing and were
all over each other. Keep in mind this is the new Dolphin Cove Weyrwoman's
first hatching with him. And then his new Wingsecond was over here in her weyr
not long after." He smiled again, chuckling.
"I'm beginning to think that our Weyrwoman gives the Weyr gossip chain
a lot of fodder." S'yei grinned as he finished off his klah and set it aside.
"This is true. However, she has also produced one fine clutch already
and is working on another so soon after coming, so we think we'll keep
her." It probably helped that they had chosen K'sedel as Weyrleader
both times, too, to keep stability.
A Weyrwoman that was useful _and_ lively. It was a good combination to
S'yei's way of thinking. Gathering his empty plate and cup together,
S'yei stood, "Well, it was nice talking with you, E'rae. I guess I'll
be on my way now. I'll catch up with you at the next Wing meeting."
"Mmm clear skies," he said, giving the customary farewell.
