Description: D'lorn and S'yei sit down and talk about weyrlings and crafting.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 6, day 15 of Turn 6
S'yei rolled his head from side to side, one hand going to the aching
muscles in his shoulders and neck as he walked towards the Dining
Cavern. A cup of klah, some food, and then a hot bath were in order.
He was nearly to the Dining Cavern entrance when he noted a familiar
form in front of him, "Hey D'lorn!" he called out the greenrider.
Turning his head, he looked back to see the bluerider who had come in
from Dragonsfall. D'lorn himself had been working hard with the weyrling
wing, but good looking blueriders did catch a man's notice. "Hey there,"
he offered as he grabbed a piece of steak for his plate.
"Hey man, it's good to see you. How have you been?" S'yei asked as he
too began scooping food from the service table onto his plate. The
lean bluerider always had a big appetite and usually inhaled an
enormous amount of food. Luckily a good metabolism and dragonriding
kept him from putting on excess weight.
"Ah fine. Just working a lot now that I got promoted and we have a new
weyrling class. They're a good bunch though," he said proudly, thinking of
his charges. "Are you settled in yet then?"
S'yei waved his hand. "I feel like I've always lived here." He said in
answer to the greenrider's question as he finally ran out of room on
his plate and had to concede to the fact that he would just have to
come back for seconds. Taking his plate and a cup of klah, S'yei led
the way to a nearby table, "I was just going to ask you how things
were going with this weyrling group."
"Well it's interesting most days. Now is the time that's the hardest since
their lives are completely changing. They'll get through it though." D'lorn
put a piece of the steak into his mouth.
"Weyrlinghood is always a rough transition. You go from zero to hero
in a matter of months." S'yei remarked as he took up his fork and
speared a tender piece of tuber. The tuber was delicious, having been
baked in herbs and spices.
"There's a lot to learn too, even for the ones that were Weyrbred.
For the holders-it's tremendous." Watching S'yei, he considered things
as he thought about the past few days.
S'yei took a sip of his klah, for once actually forgoing the
opportunity to have wine. After all, if you didn't cleanse your palate
here and there then it would skew the tasters of your tongue on the
delicious experience that _was_ wine.
"Was it hard for you?" S'yei asked, having heard that D'lorn had been
a trader before Impressing.
"It was hard being stuck in one place for so long. Then when we could fly,
it was so much better. Villith could take me to places I had never been."
And so she still did. D'lorn would never get to see all of Pern, but he
had seen enough of it.
"For me it was hard being away from my craft," S'yei admitted, "I'd
been working with the vintners for so long that to have to concentrate
on something else, like Candidate chores, was a bother. Of course,
Impressing Yalith was all of the incentive I needed to stay focused on
my Weyrling lessons."
"Did you craft after you got through your first turns as a rider? I
know a lot of the guys did during the interval. Wasn't much else to
do." The greenrider had kept himself busy trying to speculate on goods
and doing errand flying, giving them the excuse to travel around.
S'yei nodded. "I did, I was pretty happy, actually, to have the time
to go back and craft some more. Since I had Yalith I was given more
tasks that involved visiting some of the small vineyards across the
Southern Continent. It was nice to be able to get out and explore."
"Hm I got the impression that the crafthalls and the riders didn't
exactly get along. I know they don't really now. We at the Weyr are
separate from them for the most part." Of course D'lorn wasn't a
crafter so what did he know?
The bluerider shrugged, "That's true to an extent, I suppose, but the
preservation of Pern depends upon dragonrider and crafter alike. If
the harpers didn't keep people informed of the teaching ballads during
the Intervals how would dragonriders even remember how to fight
Thread? If the smithcraft didn't continue making flamethrowers what
would our ground crews and goldriders do? And then of course if we
didn't fight Thread Pern wouldn't be livable. There'd be practically
no vegetation. So in essence we all depend on one another."
"I understand all that. I'm saying that it seems the crafters at the
Weyr are separate from the crafters at the halls. They don't seem to
interact much." Especially the female ones since they weren't allowed
anywhere else, of course.
"I guess I'm just more easy going than others," S'yei laughed, "a
vintner is a vintner to me. I love meeting another person of my craft,
regardless of where they're from. I see no reason for the
separation." Pushing away his plate the bluerider stood, patting his
stomach in appreciate of the meal he'd had, "Well, D'lorn, I still
have a few things to do this evening. It was great sharing a meal with
you."
"Aye and you as well," he offered, thinking about what he had left to
do. It probably wouldn't hurt to check in with the staff member on duty
before heading to bed.
