Hygalia's decision to leave had hit G'nir hard. So hard that he went
to Weyr's stores to find the strongest drink there was and was now in process of
steadily drinking himself towards oblivion. He didn't normally drink
much, prefering to keep his head clear. But now he just wanted to
drown the hurt he felt. He was snapping at the staff and generally
acting out of character. After the meeting he had tried to talk
Hygalia out of it, in vain. She was set to go and was already packing
her things. G'nir tried not to sob.
W'ser had been carrying some things from storage to the infirmary when
G'nir flew past him without so much as a "hello." Very
uncharacteristic for the Weyrleader. Setting his supplies down he
followed G'nir, "Weyrleader?"
G'nir just snarled wordlessly, He was busy to get drunk.
"Whoa there, big guy." Rorela approached down the hall, her face set
in concern. She glanced at W'ser and gave a brief smile before she
turned her attention back to G'nir. Her eyes flicked down to the
bottles and without blinking, reached to look at them. "Wow, the good
stuff." She lifted her gaze back to G'nir's face.
"Who cares," G'nir grunted.
Rorela's voice was gentle. "You know I do." She glanced at W'ser. "And
he does too, it seems."
"I just want...to forget," G'nir said, running his fingers thru his
hair in helpless gesture. He's never felt this way before. Closest
thing had been when Rinnea's mother died.
W'ser had never seen G'nir this way, and it was Branth who helpfully
supplied, }:The Weyrwoman is leaving:{
**Ah, shi-**
"Then let's share that bottle." There was certainly no need for G'nir
to consume it all, but between the three of them, they could help
console their Weyrleader and still make sure he woke up the next
morning.
Coming out of the meeting, P'nal had guessed G'nir wouldn't have the
best response, but the brownrider hadn't expected this. Still, he
quietly watched as both W'ser and Rorela seemed to want to comfort
him. If the Weyrleader wanted to get sotted, he was ready to let him.
This whole situation was screwed up. On his way to his office, he
thought perhaps a well-placed reminder was needed.
"G'nir, she was never your weyrmate, just the Weyrwoman you worked
with. Your bronze might have won her queen, but you never won her.
This is not a reflection on you. This is a reflection on her. She's
the one that wants to leave her Weyr and her people. Not like
Dragonsfall hasn't had Weyrwomen who left before." Hygalia wouldn't be
the first.
"Thank you so much, P'nal, for your utter lack of sensitivity." Rorela
snapped quickly and tucked her arm into G'nir's elbow. She turned her
back on P'nal and her tone gentled. "Come on, big guy. W'ser and I
will share a drink with you."
"On the contrary, I think you coddling him isn't going to help him. He needs
to remember that he's the most powerful man in this Weyr and that he rides
bronze. He needs to remember that she isn't worth crying over. And then he
needs to get to work. We are _all_ looking to him to lead this Weyr. We have
to find another gold and apparently another Wingleader. G'nir, she isn't worth
your time or whatever this is." Men didn't cry. They got on with it.
And that was all he was going to say. Maybe he was a bit angry over the whole
stupidity of the situation but he looked to his leader to be strong, not this
half-picture of a man. Turning on his heel, he kept on to his office.
"I think the Weyrleader can make his own decisions." W'ser muttered
after P'nal's retreating form. What was up with that man? Did he have
filter?
G'nir stared after P'nal. "What does he know?" he murmured but his
'Second's words did stung. And he had thought P'nal was friend. This
was nothing to do with being bronzerider or Weyrleader. This was all
about him realizing that sometime during past Turn and half he had
fallen in love with Hygalia and she didn't share his feelings. P'nal
was right about one thing...he shouldn't be seen publically like this.
He turned to Rorela. "You have a good idea. Let's get to my weyr and
get really drunk."
"He's an utter ass." Rorela scowled at P'nal's back before turning to
W'ser. "You think you can help me get him to his weyr? Then we can all
sit and drink for a while. Maybe we all need a swig or two."
"Of course." W'ser said to Rorela. He had never seen G'nir even the
slightest bit out of control. He hadn't realized that G'nir and
Hygalia were that close.
"Come on, big guy. Let's go." Rorela tugged G'nir along the hallway,
gesturing for W'ser to get his other arm. "I hear a bottle of wine
calling our names."
"Best damn idea on the whole day," G'nir replied.
