Getting Settled

Writers: Anaria, Heather
Date Posted: 5th July 2014

Characters: Chaysea, Naika
Description: Naika arrives at DCW, and Chaysea helps her get settled in.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 25 of Turn 7
Notes: This post and "Making Waves" were both mentor approved by EMma

Naika's head was still in the clouds when she was dropped off by the
greenrider who'd Searched her, and given directions to the Headwoman's
office. And though she had tried to listen carefully, it was all too
exciting for her, and she'd ended up aimlessly wandering for a good
while before finally making her way to her destination. When she
arrived, she rapped lightly on the door, wondering idly just how many
candidates there would be for a clutch, considering they would
probably want to give the hatchlings options. She tried not to dwell
on her chances of success... at least, not yet.

Chaysea's office had been a revolving door of people lately- new
weyrs, new riders, new clothes, new boots. She loved it, it was far
more active than her position at the Vintner Hall had been. When the
knock came at her door she grabbed up the scattered hides on her desk,
shuffled them into a neat stack, and then looked up, "Come in!"

Naika entered, smiling at the Headwoman as she entered. Her posture
was proud, and it was clear in her bearing that she was delighted to
have been Searched. She held out the hide that she'd been given as
proof that she'd been accepted as a candidate. "My name's Naika," she
said. I was told by a searchrider to report to you to get a barracks
assignment?

"Pleasure to meet you Naika." Chaysea pulled out her Candidate roster
and added the name, "Have a seat won't you? I just have a few
questions for you and then I will get you settled in the girl's
barracks."

"Of course," Naika said, straightening her tunic a little bit more as
she took her seat. One hand reached up to straighten her harper knots;
a nervous tick that she'd been trying for months to curtail. "What
would you like to know?"

"Just some general information- your age, where you are from, were you
a part of a craft, if not, do you have any crafting interests at the
Weyr?" Chaysea readied her stylus and picked up her clipboard.

"I'm seventeen turns old, I was born at Turning Brooke Cothold, near
Verdant Grove. I was an apprentice Harper before I came here," she
answered, her eyes flitting curiously around the room while she spoke.
"I didn't have a specialty but I liked printing, and I have a neat
hand."

Chaysea jotted down the information before glancing back up at the
girl, "And how familiar are you with Weyr customs?" The Candidates
that Dolphin Cove currently had ranged from the most weyrbred to the
most holdbred who refused to even wear pants because they were some
sort of abomination.

"Well, I took classes on them at the Harper Hall, obviously. And I
would say that comparative to most others my age that I'm reasonably
open minded." She fully intended on breaking her father's biggest
rule- that she must maintain her virginity until she was married- as
quickly as she could. "I am no prude, and I'm willing to work hard."

"Excellent," Chaysea said, jotting down the rest and then sliding her
clipboard into the top drawer of her desk. She would add Naika's
information to the filing cabinet of other Candidate information
later. The Headwoman pushed away from her desk, "Allright, come with
me then and I will show you to the Candidate Barracks."

"Yes ma'am," she said politely. She had no idea if etiquette was the
same at the Weyr as it was at the Hold, but she'd found that it was
always better to be safe than sorry. "How long have you been at
Dolphin Cove?" she asked. Polite conversation made for good
impressions, even if it didn't necessarily result in Impressions.

"Couple of months," Chaysesa answered with a smile, "after the last
Headwoman suddenly up and quit." She led the way, which was pretty
simple, from the Headwoman's office to the Candidates Barracks. Giving
a good knock on the door, she swung it open, knowing that most of the
Candidates would be in class or doing chores at that time of day,
"Here we are." She motioned to an empty cot with an empty trunk beside
of it, "This will be yours, you can put your things in that trunk."

"Oh, so you're a new person too!" she said. She made certain to count
the number of cots she passed so she didn't inadvertently steal
someone else's, and sat her bag of things down. She would unpack her
things and place them in her chest after Chaysea left. "Where is
everyone?" she asked. She had figured that the barracks would be
packed full of candidates by now.

"Class or chores," Chaysea told her, "and yes, I am new too. I just
came here from the Vintner Hall." She crossed her arms over her chest
as she glanced around the barracks, "Well, if there is anything that
you need, supplies, clothes, that sort of things, let me know and I
will get them for you."

"Ahh," Naika said. Of course there would be classes and chores at the
Weyr too. She had been under the false impression that everything was
fun and games (and sex) at the Weyr. "Thank you," Naika said, "I think
I'm good for now, but if I think of anything, I'll know who to ask."
She opened her bag, and took out one of her wax tablets, and jotted
down a few notes in case she forgot where her cot was. "Is there
anything else I need to know, or should I start getting settled?"

"Go ahead and get settled in, when the other Candidates come back
they'll fill you in quickly enough." Chaysea turned to leave, but then
paused and looked back at the new Candidate with a smile, "And it is a
pleasure having you here at the Weyr, Naika, good luck with your
Candidacy." Turning the Headwoman left, closing the door of the
barracks behind her.

"Thanks," Naika said, and turned her attention back to getting unpacked.
