Making Waves

Writers: Anaria, Chelle
Date Posted: 4th July 2014

Characters: E'rae, Naika
Description: E'rae saves Naika from drowning
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 27 of Turn 7

Since he was still grounded, E'rae had time on his hands. That had
translated to hunting, exploring the jungles around his new Weyr, and
sitting by the lake quite a bit when he didn't work on Leith's straps.
Always good to have a few extra sets. Thebluerider was currently
swimming laps, trying to keep his body in shape despite the
inactivity. It was hard not doing his duty.

Naika hadn't been at the Weyr long, but she had one annoying trapping of
Hall life that she had been looking to shed: her virginity. She didn't
really know how girls were supposed to flirt, as at the Hold and Hall
girls tended to be the pursued and not the pursuers, but she wagered it
couldn't be _that_ hard. Finding the first man she could who didn't have
a green dragon waiting nearby, she took a few cautious steps into the
weyrlake, intent on showing off her... swimming prowess? Unfortunately,
flirting wasn't the only thing she had very little experience with.
Still, some of the weyrbrats were swimming with ease, so it couldn't be
_that_ hard. She was using that rationale for a lot of things recently...

She decided to throw herself into swimming feet first.... which
apparently in her case meant "solidly bellyflopping into the water, then
thrashing around wildly." She managed to make just enough forward
progress to get out to the point where the water was over her head
before realizing swimming wasn't just something you winged. As her head
drifted under the water, she panicked. **Now what...**

A hand came around her shoulders and pulled her upwards. "What are you
doing?" E'rae's voice sounded irritated but also a little
confused. Did the girl have a death wish?

Naika coughed a few times, fighting to force the water out of her lungs.
Was he yelling at her? Had she made him angry somehow? She wasn't quite
sure. "Swimming?" she answered weakly once she was able to speak again.
"I don't.... I didn't realize it was hard."

"You don't know how to swim and you jumped into a lake?" Death wish it
was. Incredulous, E'rae kept his hold on her. If he didn't think her
crazy, he might have noticed her young wet body. As it was, he was more
concerned about getting her to the shallow end and began swimming that way.

"I thought..." she started to say, but then she realized that she had no
idea how she was planning on ending that sentence. Certainly not with
the truth... "I grew up in a landlocked Hold," she decided to say
instead, "so I didn't really know that swimming wasn't something that
you could just... you know... do." She cringed at just how awkward that
sounded.

When they got to the shallow end, he let her stand up. "Well...from now on
please learn before venturing too far out. It would be a shame for
someone so young to drown." Shaking his head, the bluerider began to get
out of the water. Too much death had happened recently for him to be so
close to more. He grabbed a towel and started to dry off.

She bit down on her lip, looking up at E'rae with wide eyes. "Okay," she
said. She'd read enough romance stories at the Harper Hall to know that
men loved being able to swoop in and save a young lady. "Thank you so
much for saving me," she added, reaching out with one hand to run it
down a muscled arm. "I hope there's someway that I can repay you..." She
hoped the things that worked in the stories worked in real life.

"Dragonriders have a duty to save Pern and its people. Just count it as
duty even though there was no Thread involved." He wiped his face and
threw the towel over his shoulder, slipping on the sandals he'd worn down.

Shards, he seemed like he was getting ready to leave! "But... but... I'm
sure that there's _something_ you'd like," she said, her arms coming
forward to push together what little cleavage she possessed.

"Unless you can take me back in time to change the last turn or so of my
life, I think I'll be allright thanks." He sighed and started walking.
"Good luck candidate."

"Oh. Uh, ok. Bye," she said to E'rae's departing form. She was a bit
perplexed. Maybe he _was_ a greenrider?
