She's Doing What?

Writers: Ames, Paula
Date Posted: 15th August 2014

Characters: H'vack, B'jon
Description: H'vack tests B'jon's green for something.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 8, day 23 of Turn 7

It was a common step towards the end of a weyrling class's time. They
would introduce them to a group of potential candidates. Some already
chosen by the searchdragons, some clearly dismissed by the
searchdragons. They would ask the senior weryling pairs to meet with
the group and share with them some of their experiences as a way of
helping the new candidates on their way. There were many other hidden
motives to these so called sessions. The weyrlingmasters, dragons, and
other key staff were watching the pairs for special skills or gifts
that might come in handy...potential weyrlingstaff, queen's wing
candidates, searchdragons, and more.

H'vack, having introduced the group of weyrlings to those assembled,
had asked each to step forward and share something he or she had
learned during their weyrling training that they felt was most
valuable. Then those gathered could ask questions if they desired.

"B'jon, you're up," H'vack stated, stepping aside to allow the
greenrider and his dragon to take centerstage. "Share with those
gathered something you feel was most valuable to you and would assist
them in decided whether to Stand or not."

"All right, Sir," B'jon replied and stepped forward with Denenth.
"Now, who could resist lovelies like these," he started and then
Denenth suddenly nearly bursted out of her hide. She lunged forward,
almost pressing her muzzle to candidates faces.
}: This one, definently! :{, she sounded excited. }: No, not this
one,:{ she dismissed the next one.

"Denenth! What are you doing?" B'jon asked, feeling a blush creep up
to his cheek. What kind of advertise this one was for Standing? He
just wished she didn't scare them.

H'vack watched the little green's actions with intense interest.

"B'jon is everything alright with Denenth?" He asked from the
sidelines, watching as some of those gathered drew back while others
seemed to laugh and try and reach to pet the green.

Rilarth, of course, was already relaying what was happening to his
rider, but H'vack still wanted B'jon to speak for them and explain
what he thought was going on.

"She's acting strange, Sir," B'jon replied.
Denenth continued her examination of the youths.

}:I'm not sure about him. Maybe. This one, if she doesn't have egg in
Sands waiting for her, I'll eat my straps. :{

Only now it dawned to B'jon what she was doing. "Umh, I think she's
Searching them," he said. He wasn't sure if he should be astonished or
embarrassed.

H'vack cocked half a smile. At least the lad had figured it out. He'd
watched many a weyrling witness such things in their dragon and
_still_ miss the signs.

"Ah," H'vack replied. "Share with us exactly what she is saying about
these ones over here." He pointed to a few gathered in a group that
had not been visited by the green yet.

"All right, sir," B'jon replied, and directed Denenth's attention to
the pointed group. He repeated out loud what his green said. There was
two people Denenth wasn't sure about, for the rest she had definite
opinion of.

"Very good, Thank you B'jon. For now, see if you can get Denenth to
allow you to finish your speech. When you are finished I'd like to
meet with you privately," H'vack stated a hint of a smile tweaking the
edges of his lips.

After the class was over, B'jon found himself in the Weyrlingmaster's
office. "Does that mean my Denenth is Search dragon?" the boy asked.

"Yes, B'jon, that's exactly what it means," H'vack replied. "It's
quite a honor for the pair of you also. You should both be very
proud."

"We are. At least I am. She doesn't seem to feel any different," B'jon answered, his eyes glazing when he communicated with his lifemate.

}:I always knew that, :{ Denenth remarked matter-of-factly.

"Alright then. We'll have you meet with some of the other search dragons and they will provide you both with some additional training in this area. Once they feel you are both prepared, you will be permitted to join them for search." H'vack gave the young lad a smile. "Congrats B'jon. You'll be off to the wings now anyday, but know that my door is always open if you need anything."
