Description: Master Solis arrives and does business with the Headwoman
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 5 of Turn 7
Chaysea had met several new crafters who were coming to the Weyr for
the Weyrwoman's electricity project. She had to admit that the thought
of having electricity everywhere was rather intriguing and she could
not wait until it was everywhere. She already knew the name of the man
she was meeting as she had been told that he was going to be the lead
on the project.
"Master Solis." She smiled, her eyes flicking to his shoulder knots,
"My name is Chaysea, I'm the Headwoman. If you'll follow me to my
office I will help get you settled in."
"That would be appreciated, Headwoman," Solis said, following behind her. "I
appreciate the assistance - I know Headwomen are what really make a place
run."
Chaysea grinned at that, "Master Solis, I think you and I are going to
be fast friends." She unlocked the door to her office and led the way
in.
He laughed and followed her in. "It's true, though. You keep everyone
fed and clothed, make sure the place doesn't fall down around people's
ears...it's thankless work, but it's vital. I assume I'll be working
with you most often on this project, unless the goldriders take
especially close interest?"
"I know the Weyrwoman is very interested in this project, but she is
very pregnant and on bed rest." Chaysea was not sure how actively
involved Cyradis would be in the project at the moment. "But, yes, I
will keep you fed, clothed, and if you need more workers I will try to
scrounge those up as well."
He nodded. "It would be nice to have some hands for some unskilled
work, though we'll have to figure out what we can put them to."
Chaysea nodded, "Sure, you just let me know what you need." She pulled
out her diagram of the weyrs and crafter quarters, "Now, let's get you
into a room."
"You've been here longer than I have, so I take your suggestion. I
hear rumor there's a whole section the Harpers had been using?"
"That's correct," the Headwoman circled the area with her finger. "I
can put you and any other technicians and workers on the project
together, if you would like."
"That would be nice," he said. "Some of those who are coming have
never lived in a Weyr before, it might be good for them to be around
others who are similar. No offense to Weyrfolk."
"I'm Hallbred myself so I understand exactly" Chaysea said in
agreement, "I'll reserve a corridor for just that reason then."
His eyebrows raised in surprise. "Really? That is an advantage for us
then, your understanding. I've spent some time at a Weyr myself."
Chaysea sat back in her chair, "Really. I only just came to the Weyr a
few months ago." She confirmed.
"Was it quite the change for you?" He was curious if she'd leave in
disgust, like Zakaiha.
"It was a big change," Chaysea admitted with a lift of her shoulders.
"But, I willingly made the choice to come here because there were more
opportunities for a widow here than at the Hall. I still don't see
completely eye to eye with all of the dragonriders and their
lifestyle, but it is their lives and they can live them however they
want. As long as I can do the same." She smiled.
"A sensible policy." He nodded, considering her words, then switched
back to the area topic.
"So there's a specific corridor of rooms. What about bathing facilities?"
Chaysea shook her head, "The suite that belonged to the former
Hallmaster has a small, private bathing room attached. Everything is
communal I am afraid." That was just something one had to get use to
with Weyrlife.
"Communal and mixed by sex, or are there two that could be designated
for men and for women? I'm not concerned so much for myself as I am
for those with younger children," he added.
"I am not sure about that. I will ask the Weyrwoman and get back you."
Chaysea was not sure if the harpers before had segregated the bathing
facilities or not.
"Understood," he said. Then he looked at the chart. Would it be
presumptuous, he wondered... "My children don't live with me anymore,
but they might visit. Is there something available with an extra room
that might work as guest space?"
"You could take the old Hallmaster's quarters?" Chaysea suggested.
He felt a little better that she suggested it. "That would be fine,
thank you. Anything else you think we should be aware of about the
space?"
The Headwoman shook her head, "I don't think so but should anything
come up I am sure you and I will be seeing plenty of each other
throughout this project." She smiled.
He gave her an answering smile. "Oh, I'm sure we will be. I hope it
won't be too much a hardship, and you'll like our work."
