After getting himself settled, Ricker went to find Master Solis. It had
been a long
time since they'd seen each other but Ricker had fond memories of the man,
and it
was a letter from the Master that had brought him to Dolphin Cove Weyr.
The Weyr was
a primitive warren and it took him a few tries to find the right door to
knock on.

In the privacy of his own rooms, he'd felt comfortable to set up all of
his tools
and some small projects. He might have to spend much of this project
oversighting,
but he could make tiny curios on his own time, maybe sell them to some
interested
weyrfolk - get a few new apprentices?

"Come on in," Solis called, quickly setting aside his tools and looking for
refreshments. All there was was a jug of water.

"Solis." Ricker strode in, a wide grin on his face. The room immediately felt
familiar - even though it was lit by glows - and he'd expected nothing less.
"Hello!"

"Welcome to the new project, Ricker," Solis said with a grin. "How was the
travel?"

"Predictable." Ricker found somewhere to sit, and carefully moved a few
sheets of
hide before doing so. "It took a while, though-- I brought a generator and
you
should have heard the bluerider I caught a ride with grumbling. Between
that and my
tools, I wasn't sure that we were going to take off. How about you?"

"If it's any comfort, the Weyrwoman has said we can ask dragons for
assistance, and I think we might be able to get a bronze next time. As for
me...it's rather warm here isn't it? But there'sso much opportunity."

"_Stinking_ hot." Ricker fanned himself with one of the hides he'd moved.
"I don't
know how they stand it. Listen-- I know you're working for the Weyrwoman,
but my
suggestion? Let's hook my generator up to a wind turbine on the beach, and
at least
get some fans and _proper_ lighting down in our quarters and the workrooms."

"That's not a terrible idea, and we can point out that it's proof of
concept-ing." What would power the crafter quarters wouldn't run the whole
Weyr, but it would give them a chance to test out the types of power the
Weyr offered.

"Proof of concepting, and living like civilized folk while we're at it,"
Ricker
said, pleased that Solis seemed to be on board. "Too bad we can't do
anything about
the bathing situation while we're at it. That's one thing I'll miss-
my own toilet and
bathing chamber."

"Well, there's a Mason for constructing, but I think that might be pushing
it when we're guests."

He shrugged. "Maybe, maybe not. There's no sense in the shoemaker's
children going without shoes."

"Also true. You can talk to him if you think it'll work."

"Maybe let's let the Master bathe with the greenriders a few times
first," Ricker
said with a grin. It was amazing how persuasive dragonriders could be,
and Crafters
weren't known for letting problems they could fix stay problematic.

Solis laughed at the image. "There might be some adjustment issues," he
allowed. "I wonder how the Harper Hall managed it?"

"Who knows? They're a pretty conservative bunch, so I bet more than a
few of them
went back to Emerald Falls a little older, a whole lot wiser, and with
a lot more
grey hair." Ricker leaned comfortably back into his chair and draped
his arms over
the back. There might be some good stories about the Harpers floating
around the
Weyr-- he'd have to find them. "What other Technicians are here?"

"A couple more with Weyr experience, including Kumore. Ladren, who you
might remember from the Hall. A few apprentices."

Ricker thought for a moment. "Ladren...perhaps it will come to me when
I see him. I don't know this Kumore, either."

"Hoping a few more arrive soon, but it seems like a good mix for now.
I don't think there's anyone I can't work with."

The Journeyman could only hope that he'd be able to say the same.
"Well, let me know
when you want to start-- officially. I'd like to take a day or two to
move in and to
make sure the generator is working, maybe see what the workrooms are
like, that sort
of thing. Let me know when the kick-off meeting is."

"Might even be the beginning of the next sevenday, honestly. I agree about
getting the lay of the land. I'll be doing some research into if there's
anything beyond the smaller rivers for generation, maybe get an aerial
survey."

"Well, come find me when you need me. My room is about five doors that
way," Ricker said, gesturing vaguely to his right. At least, that's
where he hoped he'd left his room. "I should leave you to your
project-- whatever it is. What are you doing, anyway?"

"I'm going to make some entertainment contraptions for weyrfolk in
hopes of getting some interest in what technicians do. Everyone
appreciates lighting and fans, but rigging something cute that they
can make operate, get the young ones excited." Solis waved at the
wiring.

Privately Ricker disagreed-- toys were inconsequential. But Masters
had their idiosyncrasies, and toys were a relatively harmless pastime.
"You're looking for an apprentice?"

"I think so. Nesting instinct, maybe." All of his young ones were gone
to their own lives, now.

Nesting. What a terrifying thought. "I'll keep an eye out for you
then, see if there are any likely lads or lasses hovering about."

"I appreciate that. Thanks for stopping by - it's good to have one
friendly face around here." As opposed to strangers to be working with
in close company for months.

Ricker grinned. "This is going to be fun, Solis. A whole Weyr to play
around with again."

"We'll make Dolphin Cove impressive," he agreed. "And who knows what
it'll bring us when we're done?"
