Rayan took a deep breath before pushing open the door, his hand
firmly clutched to Bethila's as they entered the room together. This
was it, the grand moment he'd been waiting for all his life. Many
people had gathered to witness this special moment and he felt pride
swelling in his chest as he took his place beside Master Harper
Vestian, who would install him in his new position.

Chupsin stood near Keayd, curious. He'd seen the healers' way of doing
things and wondered if the vintner version was the same. As it was, he
was scanning the crowd diligently making sure there was no poisoned
wine at this affair after the last wedding he'd been to.

Bethila squeezed her husbands hand and smiled up at him. "You'll do
fine love," she said softly.

Rayan cast a glance aside at Bethila and nodded with a thankful smile.
Yes, he would do fine. He had worked for it hard, earned it well and
to top it off, Bethila was right there backing him up. He'd be
Hallmaster soon now.

Keayd stood among the rest of the hall's crafters and other visitors. He
was feeling very uncomfortable in his gather clothes and standing up made
his club foot ache.

G'nir, as a Weyrleader of Dragonsfall Weyr, had arrived to represent the
Weyr. After all, Vintner Hall was also tithing the Weyr and the Weyr
protected their wine yards. Not to mention that dragonriders were
often clients of the hall.

In his place with the rest of the apprentices, Rohagelen tried to make
himself invisible. He hated to be called in front of anyone and hadn't
been asked to

do any special duties. Still, he found himself curious
about the new

Hallmaster. What would the man be like?

Vestian stood on the dais calmly, but his own recent elevation was
clear in his thoughts. Like Rayan, he had stood with his wife before
a crowded hall full of his peers, and he knew the pride and
nervousness that Rayan must have been feeling at the moment. He waited
until the Hall quieted before beginning. "Master Rayan, do you swear to
uphold the honor of the Vintnercraft? Do you swear to care for your Hall
carefully and wisely, and for your fellow Vintners as family? Do
you swear to keep the Tradition of the Vintnercraft strong in Hold,
Hall, and Weyr, and ensure that what your Hall produces will be of the
highest quality and those whom you teach will honor the commitment you
set forth?"

"I solemnly swear with all that I have," Rayan said, only the
slightest nervous lilt to his voice. He was indeed determined to do
just that. To make 'his' Vintner Hall the best there ever had been. To
have people speak of his time as Hallmaster as a golden time for the
Vintner Hall for turns to come. Oh he had such ambitions... and now
he'd have the power to finally achieve them.

G'nir watched the ceremony, wondering what kind of man Rayan was.
Would he be easy to work with or would he treat the dragonrider's with
distain?

Bethila's eyes shone with warmth and pride in her husband as she stood
watching the ceremony.

Though it was only a matter of seconds, the time Vestian took to respond
to his oath took ages for Rayan. The masters' stomach was churning
violently, longing deeply for the moment the knots would be pinned to his
chest.

Keayd restrained the need to cheer, it wasn't the time for that, yet.

Rohagelen, on the other hand, was eyeing the food and was thinking to
himself about how long it might take to eat one of those desserts.

Much as had been done for him, Vestian paused and handed the knots to
Rayan's wife with a smile full of charm. "The honor is yours, Lady."
He turned to Rayan and the crowd as he spoke firmly. "By Master
Rayan's oath and my authority, I present you Hall Master Rayan."

Bethila's hands shook only slightly as she took the new knots and
pinned them to her husbands shoulder. She stood next to her handsome
husband and beamed at the gathered crafters and other honored guests.

Clovente stood with the group of other Masters, small though it was
and let out a whoop of approval while he applauded.

Now it was time to cheer and applaud and Keayd joined the rest of the
hall's crafters in doing so. He also hoped it meant he would get off his
feets soon.

G'nir stepped forward to congratulate the new Hallmaster. "Let me be the
first on to congratulate you, Hallmaster Rayan," he said and offered his
hands.

Rayan couldn't believe it, it was done! His eyes locked with Bethila in
jubilation for just a few seconds, before he turned to his public duty as
the new Hallmaster.

"Thank you, Weyrleader G'nir, it means a lot to me you took the effort to
come down for the ceremony. I hope you'll enjoy your evening here. I'll be
sure to bring you some of our finest brews for tasting."

"Thank you, Rayan. It's always a pleasure to visit the Hall," G'nir replied
and moved aside to let others have their turn.

And as many more congratulations followed, the reality slowly started to
settle in for Rayan. He was the Hallīs new Hallmaster for real now.
