A Way In

Writers: Cali, Francesca
Date Posted: 11th November 2008

Characters: Barthella, G'len
Description: G'len asks Barthella's help in finding a partner for the Turns End Celebration.
Location: Vintner Hall
Date: month 12, day 13 of Turn 4

G'len finished his meal, keeping an eye on the door to the kitchens.
He was hoping Barthella would come out while he was still eating, so
he could call her over without others noticing. However, she didn't
appear, and he began to worry that she wasn't there at all. As soon
as he finished his meal and left payment on the table he managed to
sneak over to the kitchen entrance without anyone else seeing.

Opening the door a bit, he poked his head through. "Barthella?" he
called out in a loud whisper. Ah! There she was. "Barthella" he
said, a bit louder. If anyone could get him into the Turns End
celebration it was her.

The head cook looked up from where she had been concentrating on
skinning tubers and smiled. "G'len, what can I do for you?"

G'len edged fully into the kitchen, careful not to touch anything. "I
just spoke to the Tavern Master and learned about the wonderful Turns
End celebration you're planning. However, I'm not a vintner, and so
can't go unless..."

"Unless Zandreu changes his mind?" Barthella tried to fill in his
unfinished sentence. "Not very likely."

"I didn't think so. How hard would it be for me to show up and
somehow get in without him noticing?" It didn't hurt to ask.

"Oh I don't think getting in will be a problem for you," she replied
with a chuckle, "It'll be staying hidden without Zandreu seeing you
all night that you might find difficult."

"True. Perhaps a disguise? A wig?" Then, more seriously, "I'm
actually hoping to legitimately come to the celebration. Do you know
any open-minded vintners who wouldn't be against attending with me?
Perhaps dragonrider vintners?" Sneaking in would only be a last
resort; although it could be fun to don a fun outfit and a wig.

Barthella chuckled again, G'len was always so amusing. "You could try
a wig, but you'd be banished from the Tavern forever if Zandreu caught
you. I think you're right to try the guest route. If you _do_ happen
to find a dragonrider vintner, would you please send them my way?
I've a desperate need for fresh fish and I was hoping I could work
some sort of deal for transport."

"I'll do my best. Although, just convincing someone to take me might
be all I'll be able to manage." Unless he found a cute bluerider.
Then, maybe it wouldn't be so hard.

"I'll keep an open ear around here too." she offered, she did have a
soft spot for the man, "You wouldn't be open to a female companion for
the evening would you?"

"That's a possibility." As long as she didn't mind being with a male
greenrider. "Do you have someone specific in mind?"

Barthella shook her head, "Nope, just keeping it in mind. There might
be a vintner or two who might like the idea of a _green_ dragonrider
escort for their daughters."

"Now, that's an idea! I knew talking to you would be helpful." Now
he not only knew the perils of sneaking into the celebration in
disguise but also had some ideas to help him find a vintner.

"Come back in a sevenday or so and I'll let you know how helpful I've
actually been," she told him ruefully.

"Oh, I'll definitely be back; and maybe in less than a sevenday." The
Tavern was becoming the place he came to whenever he wanted to relax,
and that was often. Looking around, G'len remembered he was standing
in a busy kitchen. "Well, I should get back to the Weyr and see who I
can find."

Barthella gave him a wave and then turned back to her work, " Take care!"

"Thank you!" G'len returned the wave and slipped out of the kitchen.
Now, it was time to get to work.
